History Texture & Light
Texture & Light is an electronic band based in Powell River, BC. It started out as the recording project of west coast DJ Trevor Refix, but the band now consists of three full time members – Trevor Refix (studio / live), Lyell Woloschuk (studio / live), and Clare Mervyn (live, creative). The band is also actively collaborating with artist Claudia Medina for visual design and live video mixing at their shows.
Texture & Light’s productions embrace a wide range of influences that span the full spectrum of indie rock and electronic music. Trevor came over to live instruments and vocals via a 12+ year career as an underground deep house DJ and producer, while Lyell brings an extensive drumming resume and a degree in recording engineering to the table.
Their debut album The Hard Problem of Consciousness was released on November 5, 2013 as both a vinyl LP and a digital download. The album’s lead-off track ‘A Quiet Place’ was included on the CBC Radio 3 year end list of the top tracks of 2013 and spent six weeks in the top 3 of the CBC Radio 3 R3-30 chart.
The Hard Problem of Consciousness has been charted on campus and community radio stations across Canada – including CJSW (Calgary), CJSR (Edmonton), CFUV (Victoria), CJSF (Burnaby), CKXU (Lethbridge), CHRW (London), and CFBX (Kamloops). It has been called “an expansive and personal listening experience, filtering the intimacy of bedroom production through the dance floor of a road trippin’ extrovert.” (Alan Ranta, Exclaim! / Tiny Mix Tapes), while Beth Killmurray of Diffuser FM wrote that “Texture & Light walk a fine line between making dance-ready club hits and emotionally complex tunes to make you think. You’ll discover something new with each play.”
Texture & Light’s live shows are a busy and bumping affair that feature a pile of gear, custom visuals, and music to move you. In early 2014 the band transitioned to an all hardware set up and there’s no going back now…
