Biography

Henry Grimes (born November 3, 1935 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is a jazz double bassist, violinist, and poet. In the decade between 2003 and 2013, he has played more than 500 concerts (including many festivals), taught master classes, and given workshops and poetry readings in 29 countries in North America, Europe, and the Middle and Far East.

As a youth, Henry obtained his music education at the Mastbaum School and for three years at Juilliard. In the ‘50’s and ‘60’s, he came up in the music playing and touring with Arnett Cobb, Willis “Gator Tail” Jackson, “Bullmoose” Jackson, “Little” Willie John, and a number of other great R&B / soul musicians; but drawn to jazz, he went on to play, tour, and record with many great jazz musicians of that era, including Albert Ayler, Don Cherry, Benny Goodman, Coleman Hawkins, Roy Haynes, Lee Konitz, Steve Lacy, Charles Mingus, Gerry Mulligan, Sunny Murray, Sonny Rollins, Roswell Rudd, Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp, Cecil Taylor, McCoy Tyner, and more.
