History The Shavers

The Shavers (1996-2006) (2009 - 2011) are a Dutch Surf-Rockabilly trio. With only one guitar, drums and a singer, brothers Cock de Jong and Theo de Jong together with Johannes de Boom (artist name of Hans Boomsma) formed an unique band. Drummer Theo is known for his Animal-esque apperance, guitarist Cock for this cool and charismatic looks, and singer / front man Johannes for his grand posture covered in tattoos, but also for his rheumatism. Together, they perform with a lot of enthusiasm and energy.

The unique concept of hard, tight surf-rock and the sincere, rancid and sensitive Dutch lyrics - mostly about drinking - ensured very successful career within their homebase of West-Friesland. During the years, the band gained popularity and fans throughout the rest of the Netherlands. Their most famous songs are Cor de Moordenaar en Halvarine (Gatverdamme), from the album Poesiealbum.

In 2006 the Shavers decided to quit due to the worsening of singer Johannes' rheumatism. After a farewell concert in October 2006, it took Johannes 3 years to recover from several operations. Their mini cd Orthopedia is dedicated to the disease and Johannes' recovery. During the most of 2009 and 2010 the band again toured the country, welcomed by their fans.

Alas, in May 2011, the story of the Shavers came to a definite end. Guitarist Cock had been diagnosed with lethal throat cancer, so the band could simply not continue. A final, emotional farewell concert took place at de Waerdse Tempel, marking the end of one of the most remarkable Dutch rock(abilly) bands.
