Origins and Musical Philosophy
The formation of Redemption 87 was facilitated by Lars Frederiksen of Rancid. While Frederiksen initially envisioned a band named "Redemption 77," the members were more drawn to embodying the spirit of the hardcore scene around 1987, leading to the adoption of the name Redemption 87. Their primary objective was to steer hardcore music back towards its punk origins, away from the crossover and heavy metal influences that had become prevalent. The band drew significant inspiration from New York hardcore bands including Sick of It All, Warzone, Gorilla Biscuits, Antidote, and Cro-Mags, with a particularly strong influence from Connecticut's Youth of Today.
Post-Redemption 87 Endeavors
Following Redemption 87's active period, guitarist Jade Puget went on to join the East Bay hardcore band AFI. Vocalist Eric Ozenne co-founded The Nerve Agents with Timmy Stardust and Andy Outbreak, the latter of whom was concluding his involvement with his own Bay Area punk band, Model American.
Reunions and Later Projects
Redemption 87 played two reunion shows in 2004. In 2007, drummer Gary Gutfeld reunited with Eric Ozenne in the band Said Radio. This project also included Dante Sigona, a member of Ozenne's post-Redemption 87 band, The Nerve Agents.
