Hailing from South Amboy, New Jersey, The Ergs! emerged in 2000 as a trio of self-proclaimed "Near-Sighted Three" playing pop-punk with a distinctive blend of speed, power, and a playful smirk. The band's lineup featured Jeffrey Erg (Jeff Schroeck) on guitar and vocals, Joey Erg (Joe Keller) on bass, and Mikey Erg (Mike Yannich) handling drums and lead vocals.

The Ergs! quickly began documenting their sound, releasing two self-produced CD-Rs within their first year. Their initial breakthrough outside their immediate circle came with the 2001 release of the Three Guys, Twelve Eyes EP on the Whoa Oh label. This was followed by the provocative The Ben Kweller EP in 2002, which notably repurposed artwork from Ben Kweller's Phone Home EP and featured a song humorously critiquing the indie-rock artist.
