The Static was a post-punk and no wave band active in late 1970s New York City. The group featured notable musicians who would later achieve recognition in other projects: Glenn Branca, known for his work with Theoretical Girls and later as a celebrated experimental composer; Barbara Ess, who also collaborated with Branca; and Christine Hahn, who departed for Germany to form the band Malaria!.
The Static's sound was characterized by a fusion of noisy, aggressive punk rock with elements of post-minimalism. This blend created a distinctive sonic landscape that reflected the experimental spirit of the era's avant-garde music scene.
