History

Peter Garland

Born in Maine in 1952, Peter Garland is a composer whose work has been shaped by significant mentorships and a deep engagement with diverse musical traditions. He studied at Cal Arts with Harold Budd and James Tenney, and maintained long-standing student-mentor relationships with influential figures such as Lou Harrison, Conlon Nancarrow, Paul Bowles, and Dane Rudhyar.

Musical Development and Influences

Garland's compositional output after 1971 is characterized by a deliberate return to "radical consonance" and a simplification of formal structures. This stylistic shift was influenced by composers like John Cage and Lou Harrison, early minimalist aesthetics, and a profound interest in world musics. His lifelong study of Native American musics has also been a significant element in his artistic perspective.

Career and Publications

For twenty years, Garland edited and published "Soundings Press," a platform that supported contemporary music. He has authored two books of essays focusing on American music and culture. His extensive travels and residence in various locations, including New Mexico, California, Maine, Michoacan, Oaxaca, and Puebla, have undoubtedly informed his broad cultural and musical outlook.

Notable Works and Collaborations

Garland has composed pieces for a range of distinguished performers and ensembles, including pianists Aki Takahashi and Herbert Henck, percussionists William Winant and Chris Shultis, accordionist Guy Klucesvek, the Abel-Steinberg-Winant Trio, and the Kronos Quartet. His work also extends to interdisciplinary collaborations, notably his involvement in shadow puppet theater. A significant example is his music for "The Conquest of Mexico" (1977-80), which was performed at the 1985 New Music America Festival in Los Angeles.

Recognition and Ongoing Associations

In 1991, Essential Music in New York City presented a twenty-year retrospective of Garland's work, highlighting his sustained contribution to the music scene. He has maintained a close and productive musical association with percussionist William Winant since 1972 and pianist Aki Takahashi. Garland's scores are available through Frog Peak Music.
