History

The Constructus Corporation was a short-lived but highly influential South African electronic and hip-hop project. Formed in 2002 by Watkin Tudor Jones (later known as Ninja of Die Antwoord), the group emerged following the sudden dissolution of his previous outfit, Max Normal. Seeking a new creative direction, Jones relocated from Johannesburg to Cape Town to collaborate with a trio of acclaimed electronic producers: Sibot, Markus Wormstorm, and Felix Laband.

The Ziggurat: A Multimedia Landmark

The group's primary legacy is the ambitious concept album The Ziggurat, released in late 2002 through African Dope Records. More than just a musical release, The Ziggurat was a comprehensive multimedia experience. It was presented as a 2CD set accompanied by an 88-page hardcover graphic novel, blending futuristic storytelling, intricate sound design, and Jones's distinct vocal delivery. The narrative was further supported by comic art and experimental sound effects, creating an immersive world that remains a landmark in South African alternative music.

The original release was intended to be even more expansive; the physical package included a blank CD, which was meant for fans to use to burn a second, free album that was made available for download via the African Dope Records website.

Production Challenges and Dissolution

Despite the artistic success of the project, the group’s lifespan was brief. The release of The Ziggurat was plagued by significant logistical disasters. These included a six-week delay caused by printing errors, the seizure and subsequent loss of 3,000 CDs by customs officials, and a massive printing bill that led to a legal dispute with the label's distributor. These pressures, which nearly bankrupted African Dope Records, led to the group’s dissolution shortly after the album finally reached the public.

Legacy and Aftermath

Following the collapse of The Constructus Corporation, Watkin Tudor Jones continued to evolve his artistic persona through various projects. He moved on to solo work and the corporate-themed rap project MaxNormal.tv before achieving global recognition as Ninja in the rap-rave group Die Antwoord. The Constructus Corporation remains a cult favorite among fans of experimental hip-hop, celebrated for its uncompromising vision and its role in the evolution of the South African underground scene.
