Periphery, an American progressive metal band, was formed in Bethesda, Maryland, in 2005. Guitarist Misha Mansoor founded the group, initially building a significant online following through platforms like Soundclick, Meshuggah and John Petrucci forums, and sevenstring.org. Mansoor was recognized early on for his self-produced audio work, often utilizing a home computer and a Pod XT. This production approach carried over into his personal project, Bulb, which predated Periphery and often shared material with the band.
Between 2005 and 2009, Periphery experimented with various vocalists, including Jake Veredika, Casey Sabol, and Chris Barretto. During this period, their sound evolved from nu-metal influences towards a more experimental style characterized by innovative production techniques. In 2009, the band announced their signing with Sumerian Records, leading to the release of their debut full-length album.
