In a retro-styled, black-and-white teaser shared on Tuesday, July 28, the singer introduced an aspiring entertainer named Pepper. The clip depicts Grande entering a waiting room and attempting to check in for an appointment.

The character is met with a dismissive response from a grumpy receptionist who tells her to take a number, saying, “You and everyone else, honey.” While the teaser does not specify what the character is auditioning for, the production features a distinct technical detail: it was “shot entirely on VistaVision.” This wide-screen format is most commonly associated with motion pictures from the 1950s, suggesting a specific aesthetic direction for the upcoming music video or short film.

This move follows Grande’s previous use of alter egos in her music videos. During the era of her 2024 album Eternal Sunshine, she portrayed a character named Peaches in the "Brighter Days Ahead" short film and the visuals for “The Boy Is Mine” and “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love).” That character was a tribute to the film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

In a clip from Apple Music posted on Wednesday, July 29, the vocalist explained that the 12 tracks on Petal were born from a place of “unfiltered rage.” Sitting on the bed used in her Eternal Sunshine Tour stage design, the Grammy winner discussed her refusal to soften her message this time around.
