Public Enemy

Public Enemy, an iconic American hip-hop group, emerged from Long Island, New York, in 1985, founded by Chuck D and Flavor Flav. The group quickly distinguished themselves with their potent political commentary, tackling crucial issues such as American racism and media manipulation. Their groundbreaking debut album, Yo! Bum Rush the Show, released in 1987, garnered significant critical acclaim. This was followed by It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back in 1988, an album that achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first hip-hop record to top The Village Voice's Pazz & Jop critics' poll.

The group's influential streak continued with three more highly regarded albums: Fear of a Black Planet (1990), Apocalypse 91... The Enemy Strikes Black (1991), and Muse Sick-n-Hour Mess Age (1994). Public Enemy has since released over a dozen studio albums, including the soundtrack for the 1998 film He Got Game and the 2006 collaboration with Paris, Rebirth of a Nation. Their early work from the late 1980s and early 1990s consistently achieved gold or platinum status, leading critic Robert Hilburn to describe it in 1998 as "the most acclaimed body of work ever by a hip hop act." Stephen Thomas Erlewine further lauded them as "the most influential and radical band of their time."
